Bamboo is a grass. It reaches harvestable size in a few years, regrows from the same root without replanting, and does so with little of the input a plantation forest needs. That is what "rapidly renewable" means, and it is true. LEED recognises the category for the same reason.
The two things it does not mean
It does not mean low-carbon by default. Bamboo lumber is grown in Asia, processed into strand board with resin and heat, and shipped across an ocean. The processing and the freight are real and they are not small. And it does not mean maintenance-free. Hardened bamboo performs well outdoors, considerably better than most softwoods, but it is a natural material and it weathers as one.
Where it earns its place
Bamboo is chosen for the look: the warmth of timber with better weather performance than most wood. That is a legitimate reason and it is the one we give. A site that wants that look and would otherwise specify a tropical hardwood is making a clear environmental improvement by choosing bamboo. A site that would otherwise specify recycled plastic is making an aesthetic choice, and should know that is what it is.
