| steel in the standard frame |
"Built from recycled plastic and reclaimed metal" is the company's own line, and the second half of it deserves a paragraph. The standard frame is fabricated from reclaimed steel and powder coated in the same shop. Steel is the most recycled material on earth, and a frame that is powder coated rather than painted carries no solvent and does not need recoating.
When aluminum is the greener choice
Aluminum is chosen for exposure, on shorelines and rooftops, and for servicing, because an all-aluminum receptacle is the lightest thing a crew can lift. Its environmental case is longevity. It does not rust, so in a coastal setting it outlasts a steel frame that would eventually need replacing however good its coating. A bench that lasts longer is a bench manufactured less often, which is the same argument as everywhere else on this page.
The honest note on aluminum: it is energy-intensive to produce from ore and cheap to recycle, so its footprint depends heavily on recycled content, and we should be able to say what ours is. That is a supplier question and it belongs on the list.
