| games tables a year, 2019 to 2023 |
A games table is a decision about how long you want people to stay. A bench invites a rest. A picnic table invites lunch. A chess table invites an afternoon, and it brings the same people back on a schedule, which is how a park stops being a place people pass through.
What changed in 2024
Two things. We introduced the two-seat games table set with a double-sided board, chess one way and checkers the other, and it became the version people order. And the parks that were already buying loungers and rocking chairs, the ones furnished for staying, added games tables to the same package. Yorkson took one. Civic Memorial Park in Vernon took a board. These are not the parks of 2019.
Specifying one
Put it where people already gather, in shade if there is any, and near seating that is not the games seats, because spectators arrive. Two tables together get more use than one, because a game with an audience is a different thing from a game without one. And it needs to be somewhere a park crew passes, because a chess table with a missing piece is just a small table.
