| curved-top units a year, 2019 to 2025 |
Total waste receptacle volume has barely moved in eight years. Inside it, the curved-top lid went from a steady minority to the single largest configuration in one year. The flat-top receptacle it replaces holds water, holds snow, and holds whatever a passer-by leaves on it.
What a curved top is for
Rain runs off. Snow slides off before it freezes into a cap that has to be knocked off before the lid opens. Nobody can set a coffee cup on it, which sounds trivial until you have serviced a park where every flat bin top is a shelf. And the opening stays clear, which is the point of a bin.
Why now
We think two things happened together. A run of hard winters in the Interior made lid icing a complaint parks crews raised, and the curved top became the version we lead with when a municipality asks for a recommendation. The 2026 number is a step change rather than a trend line, so it may settle. Even so, the flat top is now the one that needs a reason.
