| six-foot benches |
Six feet is long enough for three adults and short enough that two strangers will share it. That is the whole argument, and the order book agrees with it by a margin of four to one over the next most common length.
Why not five
A five-foot bench seats two comfortably and three with negotiation. It is the length people choose when they picture a bench with one person on it. In a park, that is rarely how a bench is used. Five-foot benches sell, and they sell into tighter sites, but they are a quarter of the volume.
Why not eight
An eight-foot bench is a different object. It needs a third leg or a heavier frame, it ships differently, and it reads as institutional. It has its place in transit shelters and along long walls, and it sells at about one in sixty.
What this means when you are specifying
If you are furnishing a park system and want the next order to match the last, six feet is the length that will still be the standard in a decade, because it has been for the last one. If you have a specific reason for five, there is usually a good one. If you are reaching for eight, check the wall it is going against.
