There is a quiet promise underneath every municipal furniture order, and it is this: when one of these breaks in eleven years, you will be able to get another one that matches. Nobody writes it in the tender. Everybody is relying on it.
The list
The Rutherford bench, the Bayview bench with and without armrests, the Standard bench, the Bayside. The Bayview and Rutherford picnic tables, and their accessible versions. The single-pedestal table. The LOOP and Spiral and SURF bike racks. The Urban Form waste receptacle. The campsite number post. Every one has shipped in every year for which we have complete records.
That is not an accident of demand. It is a decision about what a catalogue is for. A product that changes every three years is a product that cannot be matched, and a product that cannot be matched turns a broken slat into a replaced bench.
What we do change
Finishes come and go with what the powder coaters offer. New products get added around the core, and some of those will become the core. What we try not to do is retire a bench that a hundred municipalities are standardised on, because the moment we do, we have made their maintenance problem worse.
