Civic Memorial Park in Vernon took a small package with one item that stands out: a double-sided game board, chess on one face and checkers on the other.
A game board is a decision about how long you want people to stay. A bench invites a rest. A table invites lunch. A board invites an afternoon, and it tends to bring the same people back on a schedule, which is how a park becomes somewhere a community actually uses rather than passes through.
The rest is a Rutherford picnic table with its wheelchair-accessible counterpart, a single-pedestal table, and a two-stream recycling station.
